Trump's Progressive Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas pose an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger confronting Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a pressing question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A US startup can launch a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, these assets could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
