The star has handed over the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize prize money to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to preserve the United Kingdom's grassroots live music spots.

Fender was presented with the prize on mid-October as his new release People Watching was declared the top album of the past year.

Fender has chosen to give the cash to the trust, in recognition of the essential function small stages fulfilled in his early career.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing my current career if it weren't for all the performances I did around the region, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," remarked Fender. "These spaces are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these spaces have ceased operations – approximately 16% of the entire UK sector.

In the last year, major artists like the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the MVT in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by including a modest fee to their admission fees, which supports smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also participated, raising in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to support numerous grassroots venues across the UK.

The money helped venues that were facing potential shutdown due to issues caused by floods, blazes and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and noise complaints.

Some locations were granted monetary aid in upgrading infrastructure and gear that positively impacted performers and concertgoers.

"The concept that revenue from performances in big venues backs the local stages, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has stated.

Fender is far from the only musician to donate his Mercury Prize winnings to good deeds.

Back when Pulp received the prize in the mid-90s for their release the album, lead singer Cocker announced that the band would donate their winnings to the charity War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite split her prize across a few organizations, such as the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I gave a thousand pounds to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked updated gear," she told a publication.

Two years ago, the band gave their winnings to the youth organization that nurtured their band, in addition to other local music groups.

Also 1994 winners they donated their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a close contact was diagnosed the illness.

"Winning was ample," remarked singer Small. "The cash was the extra but we could do without the extra, because we had the cake. So our winning impacted the lives of others."

In the past week, the MVT shared it had protected two grassroots venues in the South East, by placing them under public stewardship.

The Joiners in Southampton and The Croft in the city were purchased under the community ownership initiative, which is backed by the arts council and music fans who purchase "stakes" in the venues.
